How Do I Design a Website?

Designing a website can feel overwhelming at first — there are endless decisions about layout, colour, typography, and content. But the most important realisation you can have early on is this: design is communication. Every element on the screen is a message to your visitor.

Start with purpose. Before opening any design tool, ask yourself: what is this website trying to accomplish? What should a visitor feel when they land on it? What action do you want them to take? The answers to these questions will guide every decision that follows.

Structure your content before you design it. Write out every piece of information the site needs to convey, then organise it in order of priority. The most important things should be seen first. This content hierarchy becomes your wireframe before you even draw a line.

Visual hierarchy is your most powerful tool. Use size, weight, colour, and spacing to guide the eye from the most important element to the least important. A visitor should be able to scan your page in three seconds and understand its core message.

Finally, design for your user, not yourself. Your personal aesthetic preferences are less important than the expectations and needs of the person you're designing for. Research your audience, test your work with real people, and iterate. That cycle of feedback and improvement is how great websites are made.
